EFR is a system provider active in the field of energy management in Germany and large parts of central Europe.
The company, with headquarters in Munich and locations Wutha-Farnroda (Thuringia), Berlin and Aachen was established in 1993 and is a subsidiary of Bayernwerk, N‑ERGIE and Netze BW.
Under the banner “Future-proof control, metering and communications,” EFR offers package solutions for digital management of smart grids.
EFR operates a longwave broadcasting system with transmitter facilities at Frankfurt am Main, Magdeburg and Budapest, and controls more than 1.3 million radio receivers. The company currently serves 350 customers in the energy industry.
Example application areas of the system include feed-in management of renewable energy facilities (Renewable Energy Resources Act), tariff and load control of energy providers, control of public lighting in cities and municipalities, and charging management for e‑mobility.
With the expansion of our service offerings over modern communication paths such as public cellular networks, 450 MHz LTE and broadband powerline, EFR creates a seamless transition from conventional control to advanced IP-based, secure and flexible grid management.
For this we have a generic device platform consisting of modern metering devices, smart meter basic meters, communications adapters, control boxes and EFR smart meter gateways (BSI-DSZ-CC-1000).
In the future we plan to enhance our expertise as a service provider and offer innovative system solutions from a single source, comprising services, devices and software.

Smart Meter Gateways (SMGW) are a central component of the energy transition. To ensure a smooth rollout, metering point operators need one thing above all: flexibility. In practice, this often means using several gateway manufacturers in parallel – a so-called multi-manufacturer approach. With the connection of EFR gateways, SPiNE offers a monitoring system for smart […]
EFR has received the EU and national type examination certificate for its electronic household meter in the eHz design. The successful device family has thus been expanded to include the SGM-SN plug-in meter (for three-phase and alternating current). The system-compatible four-wire meter eHz is the new basic module for an intelligent metering system for measuring active electrical […]
